How much preparation time do you put into finding the right MBA school? (Discussion)

Hi everyone,

I was wondering what advice those in the community that have taken their MBA already have for those of us who may look to take their MBA in the next few years.

How long before your anticipated program start date did you seriously begin researching schools and programs that might be a good fit for you? Did you first prepare for the GMAT only and then look at schools once you had your score? Any information on the timelines you followed might be useful to the rest of the community.

    Hi Dan,

I’ve allowed me something between 9-12 months to prepare for GMAT, choose the schools, send the applications, receive the approval and start the course. The GMAT took me 2,5 months and I started researching seriously the schools right after the GMAT (it was a matter of focus; I had been looking at the schools since the beginning).

Furthermore, I have a kind of privileged position to talk about this because I am currently coaching prospective MBA students. There is a huge variation in this timeline; I’ve seen a student who completed everything in 4 months and others who plan to do this in 2 years.

    Any other experience?

My experience is 5 years old…In order to prepare for the exam I took hardly 1 month(as I was a GMAT faculty with 2 yrs work exp by then) but took 2 months to complete my research about the US B-Schools. In fact now I can find a huge difference in the resources, especially online, available to the MBA aspirants of present times. One big resource (that I was deprived of) is Learnhub, a Social Learning Network where students can interact with professionals who can guide them right from their Test Preparation to Admission Procedures. This will save not only a good amount of time and money but also ensures them that they get into good B-Schools.
